Robin Mansell
discusses theories and concepts relating to the social imaginary in his article
titled, Social Imaginaries of the
Information Society. During this article Mansell suggests that Charles
Taylor’s theory of the social imaginary is how people perceive themselves in a
social environment. Mansell also claims that society has now transitioned into
the Internet Age. This is an age of technology where information is easily
accessible. Many people, including Mansell argue that the Internet Age is a
negative thing.
Personally, I
believe technology is in fact dominating almost every aspect of society.
However, the benefits of technology outweigh the negative effects. Mansell
believes that technology interferes with memory and stresses people. I do agree
that technology can be stressful, however it is used in so many departments to
benefit people every day. For example, this blog that I am currently writing on
allows myself and many others to express our opinions publically. Thus,
facilitating social discourse within an online community.
Another concept
that has developed within the Internet Age is social media. This is part of the
social imaginary because it allows people to develop a concept of how they can
view themselves in an online community. The rise of social media provides
people with a platform to speak on any issues they please. Gatekeepers monitor
the content posted on social media. These gatekeepers are far more lenient than
those who control traditional news outlets such as newspapers. Social media can
be used to both benefit capitalism as well as negatively impact capitalism.
This is because companies can use social media as an outlet to promote their
products and advertise. However, people also tend to use social media such as
Twitter or Facebook to share their negative experiences with companies well.
Thus creating an imperfect public sphere.
Thus, in my
opinion social media and technology has more positive aspects rather than
negative. The technological transformation that has taken place throughout
society is undeniable. However, rather than fear or hide from it, it is
important to embrace it.
