Within Fuch’s reading entitled Capitalism or Information Society?he
mentions some really interesting and vital points regarding the society we live
in. The reading revolves around
identifying if we live in a information based society, or a capitalistic
society. Conclusively, he asserts that
rather than distinguishing between a capitalist and information societal
structure, it is more accurate to analyze contemporary technical society using
both of these concepts in unison.
What I found most intereting about this
reading is how apparent this ideology is in everyday life. Think about the
world we live in, we see information turned in capitalism everywhere we look,
and now that we live in a more digital world this informational capitalistic
society clarified by Fuchs, to my guess is only going to grow larger and
larger. For instance take all the information that is stored on something that
we use every day, our smartphone. The database that is the Apple Appstore, or
any Application storage database, hold an unaccountable amount of informational
which is turned into knowledge, which in turn is sold as a commodity. This idea
is everywhere today, and its only getting larger.
Below I have cited a link to a video that
talks about how the Apple AppStore is planning on expand the app store, making
it easier for app developers to get their apps onto the Appstore, in order to
make more money. This new development on the app store is also changing the
payment structure the app store (in favor of Apple), yet in return the
developers have the advantage of getting their application on the app store
much faster. Let me know what you think.
Also if anyone would like to answer this question to generate
discussion; do you think this new “improved” Appstore, further illustrates the
point made my Fuchs? Thank you.

I think analyzing the information within something like a smartphone or app is very interesting because most people have an iPhone which means they use and have access to Apple's app store, which often times many people just pay and download apps without actually thinking about advantages for Apple or the developers for the actual apps.
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, I do think this new Appstore further illustrates the point made by Fuchs because I believe we live in a hybrid society which uses both capitalist and information societal structures. The information Apple has gathered allows for the development of a new structured app store which as mentioned favours Apple and developers which then is capitalist in nature.
This was a very interesting video, because I believe that at the end of the day, the goal for Apple is to make profit. We currently live in a mix of rising information and capitalism society which is why I think that constant innovation is very vital to any company. This relates to the point made by Fuchs with regards to having information and capitalist society in unison, because I think that we cannot disregard either of these things.
ReplyDeleteApple is a great example of this because it is a fierce competitor when it comes to innovation. The expansion of the Appstore is a blueprint of their innovation and a new opportunity for them to not only make profit but gain more information about their customers.
I do think this new and improved apple store further illustrates the point made by Fuchs. This improved version just increases the possibilities of profit thus further turning the wheel of information sold as a commodity. In the video you posted, the host says that the developers of apps have more control now, thus making the flow of information easier in the app store.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! To answer your question, I believe that the video supports what you talked about. It is interesting to see how it works with only specific phones like google’s nexus or apple products. This shows how companies are trying to make profits and continuingly developing new ideas customed to their product.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! It’s a new reality that we must face that any information that we provide online is being used to either sell or improve something, or create something new. We can look to this as a positive, though. The link you shared in regards to Apply Pay is an innovative and efficient new way we think of payment and online shopping. It makes everything so much easier for us, and there is less thinking involved. We don’t have to think twice about buying something online anymore, because we can purchase it with the click of a few buttons.
