Throughout our studies on we examine the
reading All the World’s a Shopping Cart; Theorizing the political economy of
ubiquitous media and markets written by Vincent Manzerolle and Lee McGuigan.
The reading focuses on the idea of U-commerce being the new medium of exchange.
U-commerce describes the use of computing networks to support communication and
exchange of information, products, and services between buyers and sellers in a
marketplace. What I thought to be the most interesting part of the article was
when Manzerolle and McGuigan shed light on the idea of businesses being run
completely through “the cloud”, refered to as the “mobile barn”. The convenient
idea behind the mobile barn is that it is a business model whereby the
traditional barriers to commerce—access, geographic borders, time differences,
currency exchange—simply go away.
Today we see tons of businesses comepletly
run on the cloud using online as their primary showroom.
Forbes wrote a rather interesting article on
this idea of companies being operated complexly online, and how simple it has
really become. Today we associate the online e-commerce world just like one big
mall.
My question for you is: Are you content with
the fact of how large the e-commerce world has become? Do you prefer ordering
your goods from online retailers, appose to the traditional form of retail that
has always been in existence? Let me know what you think.

Great question. I think the world of e-commerce will only continue to grow. We have become so lazy and dependent on the internet, it will only become more significant. I prefer going to a store, rather than shopping online. I think it also takes one bad experience ordering something online to shape your perceptive for online shopping in the future. Even if it is from a trusted store that I would typically shop at, I feel more comfortable going to the store where I can fully see what I am buying, try it on, and examine the quality. Then, I know that if there’s a problem with the clothing or product that I bought, it’s on me for not paying attention. it’s also easier to return something if you bought it in person, and do not have to go through the hassle of having the ship it back to the same place. However, I do believe E-Commerce is the future of retail, but I think it will take more experience and more confidence from the shopper to complete all their shopping there. It is well suit for people with very busy lives, specifically those living downtown when there isn’t easy access to grocery stores. Many people living downtown don’t typically have cars, so it’s an inconvenience. Company's like grocery gateway exist and are successful for these reasons. They are associated with groceries stores like Longos and Loblaws and deliver groceries to your door. It is definitely the next level or e-commerce, and it makes me wonder if this will become a threat to physical stores.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Larissa, not only is confidence essential when shopping online, but going in person just seems to be a safer way. Relating to shopping conveniently, Amazon has begun developing drones that allow instant delivery of purchases you make online.

Perhaps if there was a showroom where you could browse items before you order them, like say in a augmented reality area- then maybe there could be a balance of shopping for the products online while having the presumed trust aspect of going into a store.
I also think that concept of e-commerce will continue to grow. I think that laziness plays a role in the prominence of the concept of e-commerce but I also believe that convenience is the primary reason why e-commerce exists and will continue to grow. In society today individuals are extremely busy and work hours are beginning to be less fixed as the 9-5 job has slowly become less essential. Many jobs today I believe are dependent on demand and vary as employees and companies work depending on said demand. In terms of e-commerce in the retail world I think that individuals that purchase the products still rely on reviews and previous experiences with certain stores to insure that sizes for example will be what one expects rather then having to ship the product back if they are not satisfied with their purchase.
ReplyDeletePersonally I am indifferent in regards to online shopping and traditional shopping as depending on the situation I will do either or.
